      Viviane Albuquerque

      U.S. and Canadian lawyer

I landed in Canada in August 2007.

Being an immigrant has not always been easy. I came to Canada with two suitcases, limited knowledge of English and no knowledge of French. Like many immigrants, I left behind my family, traditions and friends.

I also came with the determination to have a better life for myself. A new life without the constant fear of crimes, violence and insecurity.

The language and cultural barriers can make even the most determined immigrant give up. This, however, has not stopped me from achieving my North American dream.

I have successfully obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Political Sciences from Concordia University, Common Law and Civil Law degrees from McGill University and a Masters of Laws degree from University of Toronto. I have practiced corporate and commercial law in a well-established international law firm in Montreal. I have also worked at top tier international law firms in Hong Kong and Brazil. I am a licensed lawyer in three different jurisdictions: Quebec, Ontario and New York.

My proudest achievement so far was to obtain my Canadian citizenship.

There are many obstacles and the road is very difficult when you move to a new country. However, my achievements constitute clear proof that the North American dream is very much alive and that you can do it.

I strongly believe that there is no obstacle too great and no challenge too difficult, if you have the right help.

I have lived in four continents and visited more than 40 countries, but my favourite activity will always be seeing the sunrise on Boa Viagem beach in Recife, Brazil.
